Tidying Up

I was actually planning to write a blog to review this great restaurant I visited with my friend last week, but I’ve been so caught up in reorganizing my space that I almost forgot to blog period! If you haven’t already heard of the new Netflix show, “Tidying Up”, then where have you been? I’ve only watched two episodes and I’ve completely changed the way I organize my things!

Marie Kondo is an organization consultant who has written successful books to describe her KonMari method. She describes a simple, yet powerful approach to life defined by sparking joy. In short, she is an absolute ray of sunshine and I’m ready to do anything she says. I wasn’t even going to watch the show because I didn’t think I needed any help – I am a generally very meticulous person and I clean/organize things to offset my issues with anxiety and control. Books organized by author and size? You can bet on it. Make up organized by function and color? Of course. All I had to see was how Marie folded clothes into a triangle to become a convert.

Over the last two weeks, I organized my clothes then completely cleaned out my closet. When I read a tidbit somewhere that Marie said to organize based on clothing thickness and not by season, I’m pretty sure my mind exploded. The most surprising thing is, however, that I didn’t get rid of everything like I thought I would have. I’ve moved many times and I don’t hang onto much, so I try to keep all my sentimental items to one box, but her focus on organizing things so they are all visible, made me pull everything out and assess. I went from four plastic boxes in my closet to just two! I kept one as a spare for all my miscellaneous items – because the goal is not to throw everything away, but to appreciate what you have and what you want to take into the future with you.

I feel incomparably relaxed when my space is clean and organized. As I had mentioned when I started this blog, I deal with anxiety and traumatic stress. Even before seeing someone, I knew cleaning was a form of relaxation for me. Unfortunately, when I’m not doing so well, I let it go by the wayside and get frustrated by the habits of those around me, but watching this show has reenergized me again! I look forward to finishing the season and reading her book.

Have you watched the show yet? Are you putting all your clothes in one pile?
